Description

Original Rice Paper Warrior Temple Rubbing.  Purchased in Thailand in the 1960's. Companion pieces in lots #18-B and #18-C.

Traditional Thai Temple Rubbings were produced during the 1960s and still were available until the 70s but those that belong to the original artworks costs more because of their authenticity. Artists back then used hardened oil that looked like sticks that were use to rub the walls into the handmade rice paper in Thailand’s temples.Since it is no longer permissible to rub the deities and the walls of famous places, the only way to purchase an original is by private sellers and auctions. Buddhist monks, who are in training, once took the initiative to sell Thai Temple Rubbings for their education.  The government was not too happy with the disastrous effects of these rubbings on their historical site and has banned this practice.  As a form of compromise, the government encourages the making of reproductions instead.
