Description

This Lot Consists of The Deisel-Wemmer-Gilbert Corporation El Verso Regalia Cigar Box from Factory No. 77, 10th District, Ohio 50 and R.G. Dun Admirals Cigar Box from Factory No. 35, 10th District, Ohio 50. Boxes show expected minor wear from age, as can be seen in photographs.
The Deisel-Wemmer-Gilbert cigar company was started by Harry Diesel in 1884, hand rolling in his house. In 1886 he hired workers and opened his own store, by 1888 Diesel had teamed up with the Wemmer brothers, Henry and William after his workers had fromed a union and went on strike. It was then renamed to the Diesel-Wemmer Company. They eventually ran 17 plants and 4,000 employees under the Diesel-Wemmer name. In 1925, Diesel-Wemmer merged with the Gilbert Cigar Company, becoming the Diesel-Wemmer-Gilbert Cigar Company (DWS). After the war, DWS became the 5th largest cigar manufacturer after buying out several other manufacturers. After 106 years, in 1990, DWS closed due to declining sales and shrinking cigar market in the US.
