Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was an architect and designer born in Finland who studied sculpture in Paris, architecture at Yale and met Charles Eames while both were attending the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This is also where he met Florence Knoll. In 1940, both Saarinen and Eames won first place in the Organic Design Home Furnishings competition hosted by the Museum of Modern Art. While working with Hans and Florence Knoll, Saarinen created the popular Saarinen Table which is often called the Tulip Table. The main idea behind his creation was to eliminate the 'slum of legs' found under chairs and tables that look too cumbersome. Saarinen is also famous for designing the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the TWA Flight Center, General Motors Technical Center and many more.
