Description

This particular Oil on Canvas is singed at bottom right and in a gold frame with brass style plate that reads:  "Surrey Cottage Andrew Spencer". Due to the signature on the painting which is certainly in the style of Augustus Spencer's signature, as well as, the very common composition and subject matter, it is possible that the person who framed this painting may have entered the wrong first name of the artist on the plate. However, it is also possible that this work is a reproduction done by either one of Augustus Spencer's students or an artist by the name of Andrew Spencer. In addition, it is also possible this is a signed work by Augustus Spencer himself. Without removing the back paper on the painting, there is no guarantee of the date when this painting was produced. The painting is in very good condition but could use a professional cleaning.

Augustus Spencer (1860 - 1924) rose from a humble background in Silsden to become Principal of the Royal College of Art. He is known for rural landscape painting. He was a member of The Aireville Group an officially recognized body of talent which thrived during the period encompassing the Arts & Crafts movement. While working in a mill, the owner Sir Swire Smithw recognized his artistic talents, and paid for his evening class tuition at Keighley Art School and encouraged him to apply for a scholarship to Keighley Art School to study art full-time, which Augustus won. From here, he won another scholarship to the National Art Training School (later, the Royal College of Art), South Kensington, which he entered in 1881.
