Description

Fairchild C-119 Aircraft Model on Wooden Platform with Chrome Plate. This is missing one propeller blade and some minor wear as can be seen in photographs.

The Flying Boxcar was developed by Fairchild in the 1940s as a specialized military freight aircraft for the U.S. Army. The C-119 Flying Boxcar was a twin-engine, twin-boom, twin-tail transport designed to carry cargo, personnel, litter patients, mechanized equipment and to drop cargo and troops by parachute. It was equipped with more powerful engines than the C-82 and a more robust airframe. Construction of the C-119 took place at Fairchild's Hagerstown, Maryland factory and later at the Kaiser-Frazer automotive plant in Belleville, Michigan. The first C-119 made its maiden flight in November 1947 and by the time production ceased in 1955, more than 1,150 C-119s had been built.
