The Larkin Soap Company (aka Larkin Company) was founded in 1875 as a small soap factory by John D. Larkin. However, in the late 1800s to early 1900s the company grew rapidly with an approached known as "The Larkin Idea", which was a promotional magazine that showcased new products and encouraged women to set up "Larkin Pantries" to display all their Larkin products. They started offering all sorts of different products by 1905, to include soaps, toiletries, shampoo, coffee, tea, extracts, cocoa, spices, chocolate, soups and perfumes. By 1912, the Larkin Catalogue offered so many products that they were only second behind the Sears Catalog. By 1920 they employed 2,000 people and had annual sales of $28.6 million. John D. Larkin died in 1926 and the company was then taken over by John D. Larkin Jr. The company declined during the Great Depression and continued to decline, it was sold in 1941 and was open until 1962.
