Hank Greenberg, also known as Hammerin’ Hank, was an American professional baseball player who played most of his career for the Detroit Tigers. He was considered one of the best hitters and was the first player in history to earn league Most Valuable Player awards at different positions (left field and first base). The two American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards were in1935 and 1940 and became the sport’s first Jewish superstar. His well-publicized refusal to play on Yom Kippur  during the 1934 pennant race eventually won him the respect and praise of the baseball world. He served during WWII and once his military service concluded, he jumped right back into baseball. His return in the latter half of the 1945 season helped drive the Tigers to another World Series appearance. Greenberg's Fall Classic performance was spectacular, as he drove in seven runs in seven games while hitting .304, propelling the Tigers to victory over the Cubs. After retiring as a player, he was part owner and general manager of the Cleveland Indians from 1950 until 1957. He was elected into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1956.
