Description

Reproduction Print, "Girl with Pearl Earring" by Dutch Painter Johannes Vermeer in Decorative Frame. Frame does show some wear on gold finish at top right as can be seen in photographs.

Vermeer ranks among the most admired of all Dutch artists. In his earliest paintings, Vermeer surveyed the styles of various seventeenth-century artists. Vermeer was intensely preoccupied with the behavior of light and other optical effects such as sudden recessions and changes of focus. These qualities in Vermeer’s work may have been inspired by an interest in the camera obscura. This is Vermeer’s most famous painting. It is not a portrait, but a ‘tronie’ – a painting of an imaginary figure. Tronies depict a certain type or character; in this case a girl in exotic dress, wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear. The original permanently resides in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague
