Description

Copy of an original work by GU Hongzhong Depicting Han with two ladies.

Gu Hongzhong was a Chinese painter during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period of Chinese History. Gu was active until 960 CE and was most likely a court painter of the Southern Tang Dynasty during the reign of Li Yu. The emperor Li Yu sought the help of Gu Hongzhong, noting his skill in portraying figures and directed Gu to perform an unusual task. The task involved spying on a well-known court minister—Han Xizai. Han gained a bad reputation among courtly circles for wild parties and his obsession with beautiful singing girls. After spying on one of Han’s night banquets outside of the palace, Gu represented his impression of the evening in The Night of Revels of Han Xizai. Only two copies of the artwork survived which includes a reproduction from the Song Dynasty which is currently housed in the Palace Museum at Bejing and a replica from the Ming Dynasty in the collection of the Three Gorges Museum at Chonggging. The painting is highly regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of Chinese Art.
