Description

Original WMMS 100.7 Cleveland The Buzzard Messenger Bag. Great Graphics. Great piece to frame.

WMMS made its debut on Sept. 28, 1968. The progressive rock format of the 1960s and 1970s played acts that would go on to national acclaim. Throughout the '70s and into the '80s, the ratings soared, and the station became synonymous with rock 'n' roll in Cleveland. Its credibility took a hit too. In 1988, it admitted to stuffing the Rolling Stone ballots to win the annual Rolling Stone Readers' Poll for Radio Station of the Year. Also, during a 1994 broadcast of the Howard Stern Show which aired on rival station WNCX, WMMS engineer William Alford cut the cable to the broadcast committing a felony in the process. The Buzzard Logo was created by artist David Helton. Helton explained that the character was born out of protest against a modification to the station's airing of the National Lampoon Radio Hour. After program director John Gorman caught wind of the design and absolutely loved it, Helton was ushered into the canon of Cleveland rock history. The Buzzard was an immediate hit and the station developed its entire identity around character. The Buzzard was introduced in the alternative weekly, Zeppelin, in April 1974.
