Description

Framed and Matted Photographic Print by William Thayer.
Information card reads:

"William P. Thayer was born in 1937 in Wyandotte, MI. As a young boy, he watched in fascination as a black and white print was being developed in a dark room of a friend's home.
But, other than taking snapshots with an instamatic, he didn't turn to photography until 1980, when he rediscovered the spellbinding attraction of a blank sheet of paper turning into a piece of art.
His first attempts at photography were close up details of natural landscapes. These eventually evolved into images which portrayed the effects of man upon the landscape - architecture.
But even though Thayer is drawn to the things that man has created, he feels the need to include part of nature, whether it is a tree or grass. There is an absence of the human element in his images because they tend to dominate the scene.
He uses forms, lines, balance, and contrasting lights, shadows, and geometric shapes to draw the viewer into his striking compositions. The "Water Pot" is a good example of this. Ancient stone stairs lead the eye upward to a lone, hand-colored object: a clay pot in natural shades of brown. A play of shadows and lights, in grays and whites create triangular shapes that please the eye. Geometric lines predominating the scene provide contrast to the curved lines of the water pot, while complementing each other.
He has said that he photographs for himself, not to make any social statements. He tries to capture those places and things that speak to him, whether it is the silent ruins of an English abbey or the stark whiteness of a street on a Greek island.
The images are hand-colored from memory rather than accuracy. Thayer has said, "I try to get the same feeling I had when I was there, the same feeling that came over me."
He began traveling around the world to capture the images he loved. He has said that he is not sure whether he travels to make pictures or makes pictures as an excuse to travel. From the black and white bridges of a park in Trenton, MI near his childhood home to the canals of Venice, Thayer loves to walk and look for those images that capture his attention.
He especially likes to photograph at night using long exposures to capture his objects on film. If there are stars in the sky, they will read as white lines on the film. Moving water will appear as glass. Thayer likes night photography and has said, "It is interesting because it is so unpredictable. People can move past the camera's lens, the clouds pass over, but their image is not recorded on your film. You have no control over the results at the time. This makes it quite exciting."
Linda Ann Chomin, special writer for the Creative Living section of the Observer Newspapers wrote of his photos, "Viewing Thayer's images, you are overcome with peacefulness, a sense of calm that invites you into the world his photographs create."
His images are included in private and corporate collections around the world. Among his many 1st place awards, one of his favorites is from the prestigious Coconut Grove Arts Festival."
