August Holland was born in Sublette, Illinois in 1928 and his interest in painting being at the age of 6. At 15, his work was published for the first time by Popular Science Magazine. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and right out of college he began working at an advertising agency, only doing fine art in his free time. Two years later he was called into service, while in Panama he met the executive administrator of the American Embassy. The administrator asked him to make the art work,through the state department, for propaganda to the Latin American countries. The El Panama Hotel hosted his first one-man show and just a few months later he had another at the Jewish League in Panama. He had works have been shown in many galleries such as, Ivan Soritch Gallery and the Edgewater Beach Gallery in Chicago and in the 60s and 70s he worked with many publishers. In 1992, he became an artist member of the American Society of Maritime Artists.
