Description

Original, Mid Century Black and White Wool Cuddle Coat with Black Fur Trim and Silver Buttons. Sold by Halle Brothers Department Store.

Justin Lipman, a second‐ generation manufacturer of women's coats, was the owner of CuddleCoat which was located on Seventh Avenue in New York. The company was established in 1916 by his father, Samuel and two uncles, Herman and Julius Lipman. It began as a skirt house. In 1926 it changed its name to the Petit Miss Company when it began manufacturing coats. Introduction of a line of coats made of soft llama and wool cloth led to another change of name to Cuddlecoat, because the garments had a “cuddly” feeling. His company became a factor in Paris fashions for the American market. In the late 1950's, he hired Victor Doris, a young freelance designer. Together they created a division called V&J Designs, concentrating on couture quality clothes carrying the Victor Joris label. Mr. Joris has also been the chief designer for Cuddle coat and for another division organized in 1965 called La Flaque de Paris. At the time, Cuddle Coat designed, made sample and cuts cloth for the Cuddle coat and LaFlaque line and also cuts for Rive Gauche. All garments were sewn by contractors in their own shops throughout the city.
