Description

1940's Tramp Art Layered Notched Wood Jewelry Box with Two Drawers and Inside Mirror and Blue Fabric Lining. Dated and Signed by Unknown Artist "J.H." who was a boarder at the previous owner's family bar on West 25th Steet back in the 1940's. One drawer knob is broken and wear commensurate with age as can be seen in photographs.

Tramp art began in the late 1800s and is a popular form of folk art that was widely created from the 1870s to the 1940s. This style of art consists of notched and layered pieces of wood. The wood was often gathered from old cigar boxes and packing crates. This style was not only used for making jewelry boxes but picture frames and furniture as well. This art form was believed to have come from Germany and Scandinavia and artists would often barter their pieces for food and shelter.
