Description

Hand Painted Saint Rita Linen on Paper Backing with Hand Woven Textile Border that was originally purchased in Rome, Italy in 1925 by the current owner's grandmother. Wear commensurate with age and storage as can be seen in photographs. We highly suggest using ICA in Ohio City for any conservation work.

Saint Rita of Cascia was an Italian nun born in 1381. She was known as a saint of impossible causes and the patron saint of sterility, abuse victims, loneliness, marriage difficulties, parenthood, widows, the sick, bodily ills and wounds. After her husband died due to a rivalry between families, Rita attempted to join the sisters of the Augustinian convent but was refused. After asking again they agreed she would need to end the feud between the rivaling families. So with the inspiration from Saint Augustine of Hippo, Saint Nicholas of Tolentine and Saint John the Baptist, Rita was able to end the feud and both families signed a written agreement of peace. Finally at the age 36, Rita was accepted into the convent. One day she was praying and asked to share in the sufferings of Christ. Her prayer was answered and a thorn appeared in her forehead leaving a wound that would never heal until the day she died.
