Charles R. Sligh founded the Sligh Furniture Company in 1880 in Grand Rapids Michigan after working as a finisher and salesperson for Berkey and Gay. He became famous for producing multiple lines of matching furniture in the same factory and after U.S presidents Rutherford B. Hayes & Benjamin Harrison owned Sligh bedroom suites. In 1883, he became his own supplier by establishing the Honduras Mahogany Company where he shipped timber to New Orleans for processing, then transported it to Grand Rapids. Clayton Hawk was one of the most notable designers for the Sligh Furniture Company and was a  member of the Grand Rapids Furniture Designers after studying at the Cleveland School of Art.
