Description

Mr. John Jr. Ladies Summer Wide Brim Derby Hat with White Rose & Scroll Motif.

John Pico Harberger was born in Germany in 1906. After his family immigrated to the United States in 1919, he started in the millinery business as an apprentice to his mother who owned an upscale hat shop on New York's Upper East Side. In 1929, he formed a label with  Frederic Hirst as  "John-Frederics".  They had a salon in New York, and a studio in Los Angeles, where they were very successful designing hats for Hollywood films to be worn by the era's biggest stars. The most famous designs were those made for Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. The pair parted ways in 1948, and it was at that point that John established his label, Mr. John.  He remained in business into the 1970s, and continued to design hats for private clients. He passed away in 1993 at 91 years of age.
