WWII Silver Star W/Certificate & Citation awarded to Cornelius Chima.

Colonel (USAF retired) Cornelius Chima was a B-17 Command Pilot during WWII. He served in the 332nd Squadron, 91 Bomb Group, of the mighty 8 Air Force in the European Theater. He flew 45 combat missions in the B-17 bomber and P-47 fighter during the war and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War was promoted to full Colonel in the US Air Force Reserve. In addition to the Silver Star, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and 4 Air Medals during WWII. Colonel Chima’s 3 brothers also served in in Europe during WWII. His brother Virgil was killed in action as a co-pilot of a B-17 and awarded an Air Medal and Purple Heart posthumously. His brother Nicholas was a B-17 navigator and was awarded the DFC and 3 Air Medals. His brother George served in the Infantry, was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart.

As a Daughter of a Korean War Veteran, the commission earned from the sale of this lot will be donated in Colonel Cornelius Chima's name to the WWII, Korean & Vietnam Wars Roundtable. The purpose of this organization is to preserve the histories of individual veterans by providing them a forum to describe their military experience. Veterans' presentations are open to the public and are recorded and preserved at the University of Akron's Archives Department. It is very important to be aware that the owner's family desires this particular item to be placed into a personal collection or museum and refuse this item to be used for anyone who simply wants to resell the item.  For all of these reasons, even if a bidder wins this item, the owner of Yellow Brick Road Auctions reserves the right to refuse completion of the sale at Pick-Up.
