Description

Please read entire description since these books are rare and valuable on their own without the story behind this particular set.

This Lot consists of a Two Volume Set of Hardcover books "Japan Das Geschlechts Leben Des Japanischen Volkes" by Friedrich S. Krauss. Copyright 1931. One is signed by the author and also inscribed to a General and 2 Colonels as can be seen in photographs. These books were gifted to the current owner by Ludwig Kempe who was responsible for the opening of Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington DC. Due to his years of training in neuroanatomy with Villiger, Ludwig, and Bing in Basel, M. Minkowski in Zurich, Switzerland, he continued working in neuroanatomy at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research under Drs. Rioch, W. Nauta, and Mehlers, and at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology under W. Haymaker. After three years of neurosurgery with the U.S. Army in Europe, he returned to Walter Reed as Assistant Chief of Neurosurgery. From 1965-1972, he was Chief of Neurosurgery and Chairman of the Training Program in Neurological Surgery and consultant to the Surgeon General, U.S. Army. He was Clinical Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at George Washington University. In 1973, he retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel, and joined the staff of the Medical University, Charleston, S.C. where he was Professor of Neurosurgery and Research Professor of Anatomy. When the current owner completed his residency as a Neurosurgeon, Ludwig Kempe gifted these 2 books to him and told him that he personally recovered them from one of General Douglas McAurthur's offices upon his death. There is no provenance to these being owned by General Douglas MacAurthur. However, the current owner is willing to provide a signed document as to how he acquired these to the winning bidder at the required pick-up.
