Description

Large Martin Johnson Heade Magnolia Still Life Print titled "Garden Ridge" in Gold Frame.

Martin Johnson Heade was born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania and was influenced at a young age by painter Edward Hicks. He made his professional debut in 1841 after his work titled "Portrait of a Little Girl" was accepted for exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and then in 1843 another work was shown at New York's National Academy of Design. In the 1850's, he began painting landscape and eventually turned away from portrait painting. In the late 1850s he then began to experiment with still-life painting, an interest he would maintain for the rest of his career. He was never fully accepted by the New York art establishment and was denied membership in the Century Association and was never elected an associate of the National Academy of Design. After settling in St. Augustine Florida, he specialized in paintings of still life magnolia leaves and flowers. He passed away in 1904.
