Description

Large 6-Piece Macey Quarter Sawn Oak Apothecary Filing Cabinet with Tiger Oak Accent Panels and Dove Tail Drawers on Castors. Wear commensurate with age.

The Macey Furniture Co. was founded in 1896 by Fred Macey and began as a mail-order business selling furniture produced by other manufacturers. The company became a quick success and they soon expanded their line of furniture. Local retailers were urging manufacturers to no longer produce for the Macey Company, as their sales were cutting into traditional retailers' sales. This forced Macey to invest in the construction of his own factory and to expand his business to national distribution warehouses. In 1905 the Wernicke Furniture Co. merged with The Macey Furniture Co. to become Macey- Wernicke Co. and later in 1908 simplified to The Macey Co. Fred Macey was sued by the Wernicke Furniture Co. in 1906 for use of Wernicke's furniture patents. Fred Macey won the case and later died in 1909. Otto Wernicke continued as company president until 1916 when he retired. The company later closed in 1940.
